Derby Days with Frozen Mint Juleps

We might be in the middle of the NBA finals*, but for me there’s only one game, err…race, in town: The Kentucky Derby. As the first race of the infamous Triple Crown, the Derby is a pageant of ponies, bourbon, and ridiculous hats. Basically it’s the greatest sporting event ever (PONIES!!!!!!!!).  If pretty ponies haven’t swayed you in taking a break from basketball finals, then I have one very delicious, very alcoholic recipe that might do the trick: Frozen Mint Julep.

Look! Ponies!

Mint Juleps are as synonymous with the Kentucky Derby as million dollar horses and seer sucker suits. I’ve updated the Derby’s hallmark cocktail, by whipping it up into some icy goodness. So this May 6th, bust out your fanciest hat, pour yourself a frozen mint julep, and place your bets on your favorite horse. Even if you wind up losing, this cocktail guarantees you’ll still have a grand ol’ time.

Frozen Mint Juleps, makes about 4 cocktails

  • 3/4 Good Bourbon
  • 2 sprigs of Fresh Mint (plus more for garnishing
  • 3/4 cup granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 4 cups of ice

  • Blender
  • A small sauce pan

The Process:

1) Make your simple syrup: Bring your water to a boil. Pour in your sugar and stir until its dissolved. Place the mint leaves in the syrup and let them steep until the syrup has cooled to room temperature (about 30 minutes).

2) Place 1/2 cup of cooled syrup (that’s almost all of it), bourbon, and ice in a blender. Blend until smooth. Serve in your fanciest glass and garnish with mint.
